Your Website Is Never Doing Nothing

Patient searching online for a dentist

A dentist recently told me his website designer said: "your website does nothing."

Seriously. Your website is where nearly every prospective patient goes to find out more about you. It never does nothing. It is always doing one of two things: converting people so they call you, or losing them.

After 35 years working with private dental practices, I can tell you the practices attracting plenty of quality new patients every month, three or four days a week, no evenings or weekends, none of them in network with low-paying insurance, all have one thing in common. They all have a great website.

Patients Are Searching Differently Now

AI now sits on top of everything. Google, ChatGPT, phones, maps. It answers the question directly instead of handing over a list of links.

Those answers get built from the practice websites AI can actually read and understand. Older sites and templates do not get pulled in. You never see the patients who stopped at the answer, and nothing in your numbers will ever tell you it happened.

We optimized one practice website for AI recently and activity jumped more than 50 percent immediately. That is how much they had already been missing without knowing it.

Then You Have About Ten Seconds

For the patients who do reach your site, the window is small. Visitors form a first impression almost instantly. If your site looks like a template they have already seen twice that morning, leaving is one click away.

Research shows people will spend five to fifteen seconds deciding whether your practice offers what they want. They are not going to scroll page after page hunting for it. Tell them immediately and they keep reading, and the chance of a phone call climbs by the second.

So What Do They Actually Want?

My clients cannot afford to guess, so we did not. We asked more than 100,000 dental patients what they want from a dentist. Seventy-six percent gave the same answer, and it was not location, price, or insurance.

On every website we design, their top answers appear the moment the site opens.

I have yet to find a website company that knows what those answers are. I once asked a designer how he approaches a website. He said, "I make sure the person paying me likes it." I asked whether it should be about what their prospective patients want. He said, "They're not paying me."

Template Sites Cannot Fix This

A template says the same thing for every practice, which is the opposite of what this requires. An older site was never built for how patients search today. And a designer who has never worked in dentistry has no idea what these patients are looking for.

Your website has to do two things at once: say the right thing, and be built so both patients and AI can find it. That is what separates a site that looks fine from one that fills your schedule.
